Antonia Handler Chayes
Antonia Handler Chayes is a board member and Senior Advisor of Conflict
Management Group (CMG), a non-profit conflict resolution consulting
firm. Chayes is currently Director of Planning for Civil-Military
Cooperation, an Executive Program focusing on effective joint planning
between civil and military organizations for intervention in complex
contingency operations. The program was developed with the National
Security Program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
Chayes is also a member of the Steering Committee of Imagine Coexistence,
a project jointly developed by UNHCR and the Program on Negotiation
at Harvard Law School. She managed the Carnegie Conflict Prevention
Project, whose focus was conflict prevention in Eastern Europe and
the Former Soviet Union, and produced several books on that topic.
Chayes is a Lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government, where
she helped develop and participates in the Kennedy School's South
Africa program.
She has served as director of United Technologies Corporation since
1981, and is a member of its Executive Committee. She is a member
of the Aspen Institute Core Group on Strategy and Arms Control and
serves on the Board of Directors of The Arms Control Association.
Chayes has served as Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown School
of Law and Dean of the Jackson School of Tufts University.
During the Carter Administration, Chayes was Under Secretary of
the US Air Force. Before her promotion to Under Secretary, she was
Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower, Reserve Affairs,
and Installations.
