Avram Lyon


Avram B. Lyon is executive director of the Jewish Labor Committee, a small but influential organization composed largely of labor leaders, lawyers and lobbyists. The JLC Board of Directors includes the Presidents of UNITE, the Communications Workers of America, the American Federation of Teachers and the United Postal Workers Union.

Lyon was formerly a partner in the direct marketing firm, A.B. Data, Ltd., of Milwaukee, that specializes in fundraising for progressive non-profits. He also served as President of Great Lakes Communications, Inc., a telemarketing subsidiary of A.B. Data, Ltd. Prior to joining A.B. Data, Ltd., Lyon was Associate Dean of Continuing Education at Pratt Institute in New York and Associate Professor of Administration at Boston State College. While there, he authored the plan for the reorganization and streamlining of state funded higher education in Massachusetts.

He a member of the national board and executive committee of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the board of the Material Claims Conference Against Germany, the board and executive committee of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Forward Association, National Conference on Soviet Jewry, and a member of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. He is also a member of the New York Central Labor Council and has written extensively about the Jewish community and organized labor.

Lyon holds a BA in Geography and Economics from the University of Maryland and an MA in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.
