What's your definition of independent trade unions?
Our formal definition of an independent trade union is one that has regular
elections by secret ballot without coercion. Informally, we will consult
with UNITE, which has provided assistance to fledgling trade unions in
Central America and Bangladesh. We also hear reports of a scrappy garment
workers' union in Thailand. In the US, EU and Canada we intend to
subcontract to hard-pressed existing union vendors rather than competing
with them.
Our long-term objective is to own and operate some of our manufacturing
(between 50% and 70%) in model factories located in free trade zones in the
developing world. There, our union shops can serve as a beachhead for
organizing activity throughout the zones. We cannot as employers organize
workers without creating a company union. But, if we succeed as a union
company, we can have significant direct and indirect impact on other
employers.
